Benefits reform needs Local Housing Allowance upgrade
Concerns raised by Propertymark regarding the UK government’s proposed benefits reform. The trade body emphasizes the importance of adequately setting Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates, which support tenants in the private rented sector. The reforms, announced by Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall, include restricting universal credit top-up payments for those under 22, tightening eligibility for disability payments, and freezing or reducing extra benefits for health conditions.
Propertymark’s chief executive, Nathan Emerson, stresses the need to ensure support reaches those most in need and highlights the role of secure housing in the reforms. Meanwhile, tenants’ activist group Generation Rent criticizes the proposals, warning they could force private renters, especially those with disabilities, out of their homes due to reduced financial support and limited accessible housing options.
