Generation Rent complains about landlords requiring guarantors

Generation Rent is raising concerns over landlords increasingly requiring guarantors from tenants, arguing that what was once a niche requirement is becoming standard practice. Their research shows a significant rise in guarantor demands over recent years, with 39% of renters who moved in the past 12 months facing such requests.

The group highlights anonymous tenant experiences, claiming that mandatory guarantors disadvantage many renters. It is calling for government intervention to limit guarantor requests to cases where tenants cannot prove affordability. Additionally, they propose that care-experienced individuals should be able to use their local council as a guarantor, with potential expansion to other marginalised groups in the future.

Their demands aim to address the growing challenge tenants face in securing rental properties without an accessible guarantor.
