One in three landlords consider quitting private rental sector
Aldermore’s research reveals that 31% of landlords are considering selling due to economic and regulatory pressures, including high maintenance costs, the Renters Rights Bill, and recent stamp duty changes. Nearly 29% have already sold properties, reducing their portfolios by an average of 32%. This exodus risks worsening housing scarcity and increasing rents, as half of landlords report higher tenant demand.
Seven in 10 renters feel heightened competition for properties, with some forced to move due to landlords selling. Despite challenges, two-thirds of tenants have positive experiences with landlords. Aldermore’s director, Jon Cooper, highlights the need for balanced regulation to retain landlords and ease pressures on both the market and renters.
