Rayner could lose housing responsibilities

Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, may lose her responsibility for housing in a potential Cabinet reshuffle, according to a leaked government memo reported by Sky News. While she would remain in her role as Deputy Prime Minister, she could be stripped of her position as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, just as the Renters Rights Bill is enacted.

This development follows a separate leaked memo suggesting Rayner proposed taxing savers to increase government revenue. Additionally, concerns have been raised within her department about insufficient funding to meet the government’s target of 1.5 million new homes by 2029. Political commentator Anne McElvoy noted speculation in Whitehall about housing being removed from Rayner’s brief, though the government denies that a reshuffle is imminent. However, reports suggest significant discussions are taking place behind the scenes.
