Landlord ordered to pay over £11,000
Josefina Velazquez, a landlord from Redland, Bristol, was fined over £11,000 after pleading guilty to misleading young student tenants. She advertised lower deposit amounts than she actually charged and misled tenants about their legal rights, particularly regarding security deposits. This behavior, affecting tenants between 2022 and 2024, was uncovered during a council investigation. Velazquez refunded £6,924 only after being notified of prosecution. District Judge Matthews emphasized the vulnerability of student tenants and instructed Velazquez to amend her business practices. Bristol council reaffirmed its commitment to protecting tenants’ rights and taking action against landlords who fail in their duties.
