Council threatens “unscrupulous” landlords with hefty fines
Bury Council has launched a project—funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority—to crack down on landlords who fail to maintain safe rental properties. Rogue landlords could face fines of up to £30,000 for violations.
So far, two landlords have been fined £23,000 and £10,000 for unsafe housing conditions, with one penalty related to a dangerously faulty electrical installation that posed a severe electrocution risk.
While most landlords provide safe homes, the council warns that it will take firm action against those who neglect essential safety checks. Landlords needing advice on their responsibilities can contact the council for guidance.
